Acceptance of the Japanese in the U.S

Before the Hiroshima bombing there were Japanese that were already to migrated into America. It’s said that the Japanese went through racism at the very beginning. They were not allowed to become U.S citizens at that time and there was a law issued by the Supreme court with the 1922 trial of  Ozawa vs. United States. When wartime came there was an executive order released by Roosevelt to evacuate all those who had a drop of Japanese blood from the Pacific Coast to concentration camps in the desert.  The Japanese were starting to treat the American-born Japanese as spies only because they had to prove their loyalty to the Emperor  Furthermore, the American-born Japanese had to show their allegiance to the U.S and prove their worth. Most of them refused to fight against their homeland and gave up their American citizenship. they were also sent to concentration or isolation camps during the war. Those that agreed were labeled as disloyal. The “loyalty oath” also caused a riot to break out creating a few casualties. Choosing to be an American citizen or choosing to be loyal to your native country had to  be mind wrecking. I know for a fact if I were them at in that time frame, I wouldn’t raise a gun against the land I come from. It’s only natural to feel that way. I doubt anyone would want to attack their own people so why  should the U.S expect them to go with it? The more you read into these forgotten pieces of history the more dirt you’ll find coming from the U.S.

Cover up of the A-Bomb

After the nuclear strike the U.S has put a lid on what actually happened at Hiroshima. An article called The Great Hiroshima Cover-up by Greg Mitchell tells the story of why the Hiroshima bombing was kept away from the public’s eye  for decades until now. One of the main reasons why they kept it away was because they didn’t want the public to know what effects the bomb did to people. Dan McGovern states that “We didn’t want the material out because…we were sorry for our sins.” After witnessing what a nuclear bomb can do to an entire city I doubt anyone there would want footage to be released. The Japanese wanted to record what happen only to have the footage taken away by the U.S military stationed at the scene and banned those who wanted to film the incident. However, the Japanese footage was the first to come out and eventually the American version was released. It is a bit understandable why they hid everything but at the same time all the people should have the right to know what really happened. A mushroom cloud and damaged buildings isn’t sufficient enough to display what a nuclear bomb does. You can tell that the ones involved were ashamed of what they’ve done. This was something that needed to be shown just to show how ugly war really is and creates precautions of the necessity to used overpowered weapons.

The Voices of Hibakusha

I came across a website that is dedicated to the citizens that witnessed the Hiroshima bombing. The interviews are actually from a documentary called Hiroshima Witness. It has over 100 interviews with the current survivors experiences and how they reflect on the disaster. There is also another site that has the same information with video recorded interviews with subtitles (downloadable).

“As a witness and survivor of the A-bomb, I want to communicate the dire reality of that experience and share my story with others for as long as I live.” – Kikue Komatsu

It also has drawings by some of the survivors

After reading a few of the testimonies it was pretty much a rude awakening for all of them. They knew it was going to be an attack but didn’t expect how devastating it was going to be after it happened. It goes to show how unnecessary it was for the U.S to drop a nuclear bomb on an entire city just to send a message. get their to surrender. The survivors demanded “national compensation” for what happened which is to be expected. No one should have to go through another travesty like this.

Dr. Stranglelove (My Thoughts)

The movie Dr. Strangelove was about a U.S Air force general that orders a nuclear strike on Russia also known as the Soviet Union for war. The pilots were surprised to see such an order and thought that they where no longer using nuclear weapons in wars. Concerned, the pilots call to make sure the order was correct. Their general in question is the one that goes by Jack the Ripper that made the order without the president knowing.  The soldier under Jack was also for the nuclear strike and told the pilots that it was not a drill. So the order was already set in stone. The president tried to get in contact with the general but Jack cut off all modes of communication with him and the aircraft was also made to shut down all communication privileges once the order is made. It prevented the president from calling off the nuclear attack. However, the president and the others were in the war room and devised a plan to stop the strike. That was as far as I could watch the movie. Out of all the war related videos I’ve seen this had to be the most interesting.

Was the Atomic bomb Necessary?

I’ve been in my History of Technology class for a couple months now and we’ve been talking about the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki for awhile. I must ask was it really necessary? No. Even before taking this class I’ve seen the animated reincarnate of the atomic bomb called Hadashi no Gen/Bare Foot Gen and I must say that was terrible. It actually showed what happens when a person is blown up and the aftermath was very hard to watch as well. There were survivors looking for their loved ones of course and looking for food. One survivor stood out to me the most when an elderly woman was looking for milk to nourish a baby. She found a woman standing in disbelief and the elderly woman asked if she could breast feed the baby. But little did the woman know, the woman she asked lost her child due to the explosion and was very adamant and refused to help the elderly woman and continued to cry. Watching the other videos in class showed that certain generals and presidents were actually against the bombing and thought it was barbaric. Just to know the fact that the bomb was dropped on a Catholic Church shows that there was no sense of direction during that attack. It was supposed to be dropped on a small military base within that region. How it ended up being dropped on a village is beyond me. I believe war is unnecessary in itself because it doesn’t seem to really change anything but show who has the most power and or it’s seems like the only way to prevent other countries from attacking. Mass genocide is not the answer.

Nuclear war game?

Hello everyone I did some searching and I actually found out that there was an old video game based on the nuclear war.  Ironically called Nuclear War, it was released and developed by New World Computing (gaming company) in 1989 for the Amiga (personal computer) and later released for MS-DOS. It is a one player strategic game where you are going against three other CPU players to win the war using nuclear firearms.

There are ten different characters to choose from when you start the game. The animated characters are all national leaders during the cold war with nicknames. The video demonstrates that you can either build nuclear weapons and or strike certain areas of the map to counter the other player’s attacks. It seems the only way you win is to completely bomb the other players to see who can rack up the most points and if you have a more populated area than the other players. It also adds weird humor to it. For instance, one of the few cinematic shows a cowboy riding on top of a nuke yelling “YeeeeHahh”. To me I found it a bit surprising that someone would actually make a game about nuclear war. I’m not sure if it was made to lighten the seriousness of the nuclear war era or just something made for a buck.

Rap and Napalms

Image

Hello fellow readers I recently came across this music video searching the net called Napalm by the rapper Xzibit. I haven’t seen this guy since the show Pimp my Ride that aired on MTV years ago. Anyway he’s back with a new song called Napalm and the music video is pretty much about war. I guess when performers go to visit the Middle East; they have to make a song about it. However, I found this video interesting and surprising to come from him. I tried finding a making of video or at least an insider video to see exactly why he made this song, but I was unable to find anything credible. What I got from the video is that if you have the power to destroy, you can wipe out anyone without a second thought. It also seems that he’s trying to say that we are in this war for no reason and it’s only going on for the money that I guess we as citizens will never see. There was verse where he said that all he wanted to do was live as a common man and just lives a normal life. With all of the messages that’s in the song it’s kind of hard to tell if he is just exploiting how the current affects of the war is warping society and or he is just stating that maybe this is how it will be as time goes on. What do you all think about this song?

Cleanup on Nuclear Waste?

For years there have been deaf ears when it comes to nuclear weapons unless a country is being threatened with weapons of mass destruction. To my knowledge nothing is really mentioned in the media about the removal or stabilization of nuclear waste because it’s more focused on the war that’s going on. I recently came across an article from USA TODAY about the cost of a nuclear mess that was left unattended since World War II.  It says that the U.S government has been building a treatment plant to stabilize and contain 56 million gallons of waste left from the Cold War. It was Hanford’s Reactor B located in Washington State, had plutonium for the first atomic bomb that dropped in Nagasaki, Japan. It is said that a major leak could contaminate water supplies that serves millions across the Northwest. A 10 year effort to work on the project has gone wrong.

What’s the problem? The startup date was supposed to occur in 2001 but has been pushed to 2019. The project itself costs over $12 billion and said that it was already tripled from the original estimates. Donald Alexander, a senior U.S government scientist apart of the project states that “We’re continuing with a failed design.” There are also a lot of safety hazards that can occur if equipment is not handled or installed properly. This means that this project is a huge risk upon the workers and can be a hazard to the world’s resources if something goes wrong. I think that’s the reason why that is has been put off for so long, but it has to be done.
